Out of Darkness, Light: Night Two
December 13, 2024 • 6:30 – 9:30 PM • Arts Club of Washington
*The price of your ticket includes hors d’oeuvres and drinks from the open wine and beer bar.
In this fundraising performance for Ukraine, violinists Marta and Iryna Krechkovsky join violist of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Maria Semes and Counterpoint series regular cellist Joseph Gotoff in a program of deeply affecting works for string quartet. A Mendelssohnian earnestness shines through in an early composition by the great Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko, which is paired with the String Quartet No. 8 by Dmitri Shostakovich, famously dedicated the quartet to “the victims of war and fascism.” Written during a time of deep despair for the composer, the work is considered to be autobiographical in nature, and contains depictions of violence and anguish tempered by moments of hope.
All ticket proceeds will be donated to Revived Soldiers, a charity providing prosthetic and medical care to wounded soldiers.
This performance is generously made possible by Dr. Robert Misbin.
