Event Details
In this fundraising performance, Ukrainian - born violinists Marta and Iryna Krechkovsky join violist of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Maria Semes, and Counterpoint series regular, cellist Joseph Gotoff, in a program of deeply affecting works for string quartet. A Mendelssohnian earnestness shines through in an early composition by the great Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko, which is paired with the String Quartet No. 8 by Russian composer, Dmitri Shostakovich, famously dedicated the quartet to “the victims of war and fascism.” Written during a time of deep despair for the composer, the work is considered to be autobiographical in nature, and contains depictions of violence and anguish tempered by moments of hope.
All ticket proceeds will be donated to Revived Soldiers, a charity providing prosthetic and medical care to wounded soldiers.
This intimate event, hosted in a Dupont Circle home and funded by the Beverly Losch Endowment for Counterpoint Concerts, will include a reception with hors d’oeuvres and wine.
